Fake or Fact? Disinformation as a Danger to Democracy

Disinformation, Fake News, conspiracy theories: Living in a world full of uncertainty about the truth of information can be overwhelming. Disinformation bares many threats: It builds a powerful weapon to destabilize democracies and aims to divide our societies. It is intentionally used to manipulate people and attempts to portray reality in a distorted manner. Through social media, disinformation can be spread much easier and faster.

Which consequences does the use of disinformation campaigns have on countries like Germany, the US or federations of states like the European Union? How can we individually cope with living in a world full of uncertainty and which tools to combat disinformation do exist?

In this youth seminar, we learn more about the nature of disinformation as well as its potential effects and discover ways to detect and invalidate it. By receiving input from experts, attending workshops and discussing these issues with their peers, young Germans and Americans can learn more about current challenges concerning disinformation and each other’s perspective on them.

Das Seminar richtet sich an Schüler:innen der Oberstufe aus Hessen und Rheinland-Pfalz mit Interesse an der amerikanischen Politik- und Medienlandschaft. Gute englische Sprachkenntnisse sind Voraussetzung. Bei Minderjährigen muss nach der Anmeldung die Einverständniserklärung der Erziehungsberechtigten ausgefüllt und zurückgesendet werden.

Die Teilnehmendenzahl ist begrenzt, daher bitte rechtzeitig anmelden. Pro Schule können maximal zwei Schüler*innen teilnehmen. Die Veranstaltungssprache des Seminars ist Englisch.
